Seminar on Cloud Computing and Security

NSU ACM Student Chapter in collaboration with the Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) Dept. successfully organized a seminar on ‘Cloud Computing & Security’ on 3rd March 2019 at North South University. The seminar was conducted by Mr. AKM Bahalul Haque, lecturer of the ECE department of North South University. His research areas include Cloud Computing and Distributed Systems and he also has noteworthy research papers on the matter.

The seminar began at 4:00 PM with more than 60 participants. The fundamentals of cloud computing were discussed with several examples. The speaker talked about the importance of cloud computing from the consumer’s point of view, explaining how technology-based startup companies can reduce the cost of starting a new business by using cloud computers instead of buying high-end machines. Subsequently, he brought up the topic of data centers and gave an idea about how numerous machines are connected and leased to the end users.

Afterward, diving into more detail, he discussed virtualization in brief with examples of Hardware, Software, Server, Storage, and Applications. The speaker named some popular cloud services including Google Cloud and Amazon Web Services and described the type of services they provide. The Three categories of cloud computing services: Software, Infrastructure, and Platform, were discussed. Developers were advised to pick the service that suits their purpose best as he spoke about the level of freedom the users will have with each type of services.

At the end of the workshop, the speaker provided resources to learn more about cloud computing and also advised participants to do some research on privacy and security Issues of Cloud Computing if they are interested in pursuing this path. Additionally, he also wished to take a Workshop on Cloud Computing in the upcoming semester. NSU ACM SC is delighted to have been able to provide him a platform to share his knowledge and will aim to continue doing so in the future.
