In 1993, during the founding of North South University, the first private university of Bangladesh, the department was established in the name of Department of Computer Science. Since its inception it has gone through many transformations and transitions. The department continued with the same name till 2006 when it was renamed as Department of Computer Science & Engineering (CSE) as it had been offering Computer Engineering program from Spring 2003. As the number of students was growing and the demand for Electrical and Electronic Engineering was creating, the department started offering BS in Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE) degree from Spring 2009 and the department was renamed again as Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) in that same year. Later on it was renamed again as the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) in 2014.
Due to low enrolment the department closed its BS in Computer Engineering in Spring 2010 and BS in Computer Science program in Fall 201. Now the department is offering BS and MS degrees in Computer Science and Engineering (CSE), Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE) and Electronic and Telecommunication Engineering (ETE).
